The Hungarian government has decided to adjust the toll tariffs with effect from January 1, 2024 by means of regulation 22/2023 (XII. 5.) ÉKM.

A new axle category "J5" (heavy commercial vehicles with 5 or more axles) will be introduced. The "J4" category will only include trucks with 4 axles. The toll network will be extended to include the M0 highway (section between M5 and M1). External cost charges will also be included for traffic-related air pollution, noise and CO₂ emissions.

Two new classes, low-emission vehicles and zero-emission vehicles, of environmental protection vehicles are introduced. Their definitions are identical to those given in points 11 and 12 of Article 3 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1242. These are in addition to the vehicle classification based on the Euro standards.

From 1. January 2024, the new toll tariff structure will consist of 3 elements:

• Infrastructure charge (fixed element)
• Charges for external CO2 emissions (fixed element)
• Charges for external costs related to air pollution and noise
  (varies depending on the tolled section)
